NEW WINES

The New York Times ran an excellent article last week about the effervescent Txakolina wines from Spain’s Basque country.   We have many of these refreshing and low alcohol wines in stock, including:  Ameztoi Getariako ($19.99); Ulacia Getariako ($17.99); Xarmant Arabako ($14.99); and also the rare red Txakolina, Doniene Gorrondona ($24.99).  Click Txakolina to read the full article.

OTHER RECOMMENDED WINES

2008 Guimaro Mencia, Ribera Sacra ($14.99)  We’ve always been fans of Guimaro and it was fascinating to meet Winemaker Pedro Rodriguez Pèrez personally at The Spanish Table. Pedro brought photos of Guimaro’s infinitesimal terraced vineyards in isolated Ribera Sacra which were, like many in this region, carved out by the Romans.  The plots barely hang onto the vertiginous hillsides; the slate and granite soils produce wines that are a pure expression of the terrunyo.   2008 Guimaro is Burgundian-like with its earthiness and silky tannins.     Elegant and balanced, this light to medium-bodied wine is juicy and expressive.  Excellent with chicken!

2008 Finca El Tesso Tempranillo, Ribera del Guadiana ($9.99) The El Tesso vineyards are located in Extremadura at 600 meters elevation.  Cool nights and an unusually long growing season allow the wines to develop a rich, alluring complexity.  Delicate and fresh, the ripe boysenberry notes have a hint of coconut, cola and licorice.  Juicy and taut, El Tesso has focus, length, and intensity.   Perfect with Jamon and La Serena cheese!

2008 Tikal Patriota, Mendoza ($17.99) NEW LOWER PRICE! A touch of candied fruit on the front with a backbone of blackberries, balanced and smooth.”..60% Bonarda and 40% Malbec aged in  oak… it has a splendid bouquet of cigar box, Asian spices, lavender, black cherry, and plum. Full-bodied, dense, rich, and powerful, this loaded effort has gobs of flavor, succulence, and great length. Only hedonists need apply.”  92 points Wine Advocate

2006 Vistalba Corte B, Mendoza ($19.99)  This is an elegant and nuanced Malbec. “Bright medium ruby. Musky aromas of cassis, coffee, mocha and tobacco. A supple claret-like midweight with a subtle sweetness to its flavors of currant, pepper and herbs. Finishes with fairly serious but fine-grained, building tannins.”   89 points Stephen Tanzer
