The Timeless Pleasure of Rioja Wines

THE TIMELESS PLEASURE OF RIOJA WINES   March 19, 2016
Rioja has been on the cutting edge of viticulture and oenology since the late 1800’s when Bordeaux vineyards were destroyed by the phylloxera louse.  To keep French wine markets supplied, Bordelaise vintners fled to Rioja, establishing wineries and bringing the latest winemaking technology to Spain. Many historic Spanish wineries date from this period and still exist today, including La Rioja Alta (established 1890), Bodegas Faustino (founded 1861), CVNE (1879), Marques de Murrieta (1852) and a number of others.

  Today in Rioja, wines vary from ‘traditional” style, with aging in American oak according to the Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva designations and released when ready to drink.   “Modern” style wines age for varying durations in French, Russian, American or Hungarian oak and offer a unique expression of Rioja.  Terruñyo-driven wines are produced from singular plots and showcase Rioja’s profusion of micro climates, soil, vineyard orientation and altitude.
Some of our favorite, traditional style Riojas:
2005 Bodegas La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva Rioja($35.00)  One of the premier producers of old-school Rioja with impeccable quality. Viña Ardanza is labeled Reserva, but has aged long enough to be classified as a Gran Reserva.  80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from ancient vines, aged separately; the Tempranillo is aged 36 months and the Garnacha was aged 30 months, both in neutral oak.  The wines were manually racked six times.    Offers up a silky depth of nuance and elegance.   “Sexy, highly perfumed aromas of red fruit preserves, vanilla, mocha and fresh flowers, with a hint of pipe tobacco coming up with air. Sappy and broad on entry, then more taut in the middle, with sweet cherry-vanilla and spicecake flavors given lift by juicy acidity. Closes smooth, spicy and long, with lingering smokiness and fine-grained tannins adding grip. A touch more lively than the excellent 2004 version of this wine and of equal quality, which makes it an outstanding value in old-school Rioja.”  92 points Stephen Tanzer/Vinous  94 points Wine Advocate
 
2001 Faustino I Gran Reserva Rioja ($40.00)  A classic house, founded 150 years ago and one of the largest landowners in Rioja.   Located in Rioja’s Basque Alavesa sub-region which many consider the best area for Tempranillo.  2001 was a spectacular vintage in Rioja and the 2001 Faustino Gran Reserva was named 2013’s Wine of the Year by Decanter Magazine.   Aged for 26 months in American and French oak barrels, then 3 years in the bottle before release, this is a full-bodied Rioja with balance and elegance.  “Restrained, mineral style with elegant tannins.  Youthful and fresh, feminine and complex.  Deliciously decadent, with extraordinary vitality in the palate and a long, unique finish.  A jewel at this price.”    19.25/20 points Decanter
 
2010 Señorio de P. Peciña Crianza Rioja ($19.99)   Pedro Peciña learned how to do things the painstakingly hard, old-fashioned way in his 18 year tenure as vineyard manager at Rioja’s iconic La Rioja Alta. A quarter century later, his attention to detail and dedication are displayed in his own bodega. His structured, beautifully layered wines speak to the soul of traditional Rioja with a Burgundian-like complexity and elegance.   “Deeply pitched red and dark berry aromas are complemented by vanilla, allspice and mocha and lifted by a smoky mineral topnote and building florality. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated cherry-vanilla and raspberry flavors and a zesty undercurrent of minerality. Shows excellent power and persistence on the finish, which features supple tannins and resonating mineral and spice notes. This spent two years in American oak barrels before bottling and then rested for two more years prior to being released.”   92 points Stephen Tanzer/Vinous

SUPERB 1994 RIOJA GRAN RESERVA

Purity and finesse from an historic Rioja property.   Firmly traditional, they produce artisanal, singular wines that are unmatched in style and grace.
  Only a handful of other producers’ wines offer the character that distinguish those of Bodegas R. Lopez Heredia.  Founded in 1877 and still family-owned, the Lopez Heredia winery has never purchased fruit.  Grapes come exclusively from one of their four vineyards; wines are aged in barrels made by their own in-house cooperage (one of Rioja’s last two remaining).   A dedication to the founder’s philosophy has been passed down through the generations, including meticulous viticulture, hand-picking of all fruit, natural wine making using native yeasts and no filtration.

1994 R. Lopez Heredia Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Rioja($99.00)  A splurge and an experience fully worth the price.   After serving this stunner with lamb chops last week (the quintessential Rioja pairing) we immediately bought out the distributor’s remaining stock.
1994 was a superb harvest, rivaling 1964 as the best Rioja vintage of the century.   1994 Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva delivers fresh aromas of spice and dried cherry fruit.   Nuances of tobacco leaf and cigar box spice have lift and elegance.  Shows finesse, ripe tannins and precision on the lengthy finish.
“(75% tempranillo, 15% garnacha, 5% graciano and 5% mazuelo): Wild, highly perfumed aromas of candied cherry, plum, anise, cured tobacco, Asian spices and vanilla, with smoke and allspice nuances. … seamless and expansive, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and suggestions of candied rose and spicecake. In the glass, takes on weight with no loss of vivacity. Silky tannins build on and carry through a very long, smoke- and mineral-accented finish. No way I’d have guessed that this was an 18-year-old wine.”

Spanish Pantry Essentials

Not a fan of slogging through pounding rain to the grocery store?   Or don’t have time?   By keeping a few essential Spanish ingredients on hand, it’s easy to pull together a nutritious, tasty meal in a flash and save a run to the store.
Conservas are a must.  In Spain, vegetables are picked at their peak of flavor, roasted or simmered and then packed in jars or cans.   Equally delicious are a wide range of fish and shellfish, many packed in olive oil.  The oil can and should be used in recipes.
Rice is a versatile staple to have in the pantry.    Rice simmered with chorizo and jarred, roasted red peppers is delicious and quick to prepare.   If there is chicken in the frig, make a fast and toothsome rice soup with Aneto chicken broth, Spanish garbanzo beans and a sprinkling of dried lime.   Or, make a complete paella in 30 minutes with an Aneto Paella broth.   Choose from Seafood, Squid Ink or Valencian Paella; comes in easy to store tetra paks with a one year shelf life.     
In Spain, pasta called fideo is used to make a dish called fideau.   Fideo, simmered with broth in a paella pan, can be prepared in minutes by adding jarred ingredients.   For example, toss olive-oil packed Spanish tuna with strips of piquillo pepper, the oil from tuna, capers, water and pasta.
Or use Aneto Squid Ink Paella with fideo and revel in this different take on a traditional Spanish dish.   If Mac n’ Cheese is a favorite, upscale it.  Combine chicken stock with pasta and saffron; simmer until the pasta is done, then drain and stir in Manchego cheese to melt.
Gluten intolerant?    A jar of lentils, cooked with spicy chorizo makes a hearty and simple meal.   Canned mackerel or anchovies are fantastic tossed with lentils or white beans.
 
Got a freezer?  Store packages of Bilbao Chorizo, Chistorra or Morcilla for the right moment.  Scramble choistorra with eggs.  Grill chorizo and serve with de la Estancia organic polenta from Argentina which cooks in 3 minutes.  Just add grated Mahon cheese.
NEW!  Hernán products from Mexico, made by artisan producers.    Just arrived are Mole Poblano andMole Pipián sauces.   Mole Poblano is a blend of chiles and spices, tempered by an infusion of nuts, chocolate and other ingredients. Typically served on chicken or pork.   Mole Pipián contains roasted pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and peanuts with spicy chiles and epazote and is excellent on fish.

2013 Narupa Alala Albarino, Rias Baixas   ($26.99)   First vintage!  Sustainably produced from a 30 year old, family-owned vineyard planted by the winemaker’s Grandfather.  The grapes are pressed by foot and fermented with native yeast.  Raised in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, it has extended aging of one year to develop complexity.   Fresh aromatics with a hint of tropical fruit have notes of citrus and dust.   Mineral-laden with great mouthfeel and a pleasurable weight, this is a terrific expression of Albariño.   Limited availability – only 3 cases came to the state of Washinton, and we have 6 bottles.

2012 Carramimbre Roble, Ribera del Duero

We rediscovered this tasty gem last weekend, accompanied by a tapas assortment.  Versatile and nuanced, and it’s now 25% off!   (6 cases available).  90% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged four months in oak.  Offers up aromas of ripe blackberry, hints of earth and road tar, reminiscent of an old-school California Zinfandel.  Very smooth and full-bodied, it displays lifted notes of white pepper, tobacco leaf and mushroom.  Black fruit and mineral notes on the lengthy finish.   Decant for 20 minutes to fully release aromas and depth of flavors.

2012 Lagar de Robla Premium, Castilla y Leon ($10.99) 100% Mencia, aged about 18 months in oak.    Plush, with soft tannins and a hint of earth.   Round and smooth, Lagar de Robla is mineral-laden, with well-integrated notes of oak.   This is really good!   “This firm red is reserved, but shows depth and integration, with mulled plum, licorice, mineral and smoke flavors that mingle over well-integrated tannins, giving way to the juicy finish.”  91 points Wine Spectator

Rare Spanish Gran Reservas Arrive!

Last December for the first time, Bodegas Beronia opened their library of Gran Reserva Riojas for sale. Our special order of three historic vintages were shipped directly from Beronia’s cellars and arrived at Spanish Table yesterday.

Beronia was founded in 1973 by a gastronomic society and was conceived as a winery dedicated to quality, exclusively making Reservas and Gran Reservas, in the purest, most traditional Rioja style. In 1982, having exceeded its initial expectations, Beronia was acquired by Gonzalez Byass (producer of Tio Pepe sherry) who expanded production to include value priced Crianzas. (For those new to Rioja wines, the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva refer to the aging process. Crianzas are wines matured for at least one year in oak cask and six months further in the bottle. Reservas are aged for at least three years total, with one year minimum in oak cask. Gran Reservas are produced only in great vintages and have been aged at least two years in oak casks and three years in bottle prior to release.) The Beronia Gran Reservas that we received have been aged much, much longer than a normal Gran Reserva, as they’ve been aging in the winery cellars since bottling. Ready to drink now, they would be excellent with a special Mother’s Day dinner, or as a gift.

1981 Beronia Gran Reserva ($54.00) is at its peak right now. A very good vintage, this is soft and balanced with great mouth feel. Dried fruit, leather, green tea, vanilla and dried tobacco aromas in this aged red wine.

1982 Beronia Gran Reserva ($72.00) is an impressive library offering from Rioja. A superb vintage, this is soft and balanced with great mouth feel. Sweet plum, cranberry and cherry, earth notes, vanilla and cigar box aromas in this impressively elegant aged red wine.

1994 Beronia Gran Reserva ($53.00) comes from one of the best vintages in the last several decades. Just starting to show its age with dried tobacco, baking spice, plum and dried red cherry. Nice weight and good balance. This is a treat.

1998 Señorio del Aguila Gran Reserva, Carineña ($19.99) Distributor close out! A blend of 60% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, this food friendly red is perfectly aged. An earthy and medium-bodied wine, Señorio Del Aguila has notes of balsamic and spice. Red and black fruit with licorice flavors are balanced by silky tannins. Full of finesse, it is excellent with pork dishes.

2007 Beryna, Alicante ($19.99) Beryna is produced by a talented and enthusiastic team who bought a 19th century wine estate primarily planted with old vine Monastrell. 2007 Beryna has concentrated black cherry, dried plum and boysenberry flavors with drive and focus. Made of 60% Monastrell and 40% Tempranillo, Cabernet and Syrah, it has notes of chocolate and coffee. With superb lift, mineral notes and a persistent finish, this is a structured red that is excellent with barbequed rib-eye steaks or burgers. 2006 Riscal Tempranillo, Castilla y Leon ($9.99) Established in 1858, Rioja producer Marques de Riscal quickly became one of the most sought-after Spanish wines. Recently Riscal began producing table wines in Castilla y Leon, crafting value wines with the same care as their top Riojas. The 2006 Riscal is a well rounded Tempranillo with concentrated red fruit. Notes of cherries, raspberries, and cola are held together by soft velvety tannins, making it a perfect food wine. This is an excellent value!

2007 Goulart “The Marshall” Malbec, Argentina ($18.99) “The 2007 The Marshall “M” is 100% Malbec aged for 18 months in 40% new French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up a nose of toasty new oak, cinnamon, allspice, violets, black cherry, and blackberry. On the palate it is rich, savory, and plush bordering on opulent. With excellent depth and grip, this substantial effort will evolve for another 2-3 years and offer prime drinking from 2011 to 2029.” 91 points Wine Advocate, 90 points Wine Spectator

We’ve got a serious case of spring fever. What a joy to break out of winter’s gloom and bask in daylight until 8:00 p.m.! We never eat dinner until it gets dark, so there’s time for a bike ride or a long walk through the neighborhood with Marcello the dog. We’re preparing lighter meals such as salad made with fresh greens from the farmer’s market, grilled local asparagus or simple dishes such as clams steamed in white wine. And what to drink? We toast to the bounty of spring with a glass of crisp rosé!

This dish is a superb recipe for spring, adapted from The Spanish Table cookbook.

CLAMS WITH SMOKED PAPRIKA

Serves 4

¼ cup Olive oil

1 Onion diced

1 teaspoon Garlic, finely chopped

2 teaspoons La Vera Smoked Sweet Paprika

¼ cup Minced parsley

3 lbs Steamer clams

½ cup White wine

1 Lemon, quartered

We cook this dish in a 11″ Cataplana which is large enough to hold the clams after they open, but a deep stock pot also works.

Cook the onion in olive oil over medium heat until translucent. Stir in the garlic and cook for another couple of minutes. Stir in the paprika and cook for a minute. Add the parsley and wine and bring to a boil. Add the clams and cover; cook until all the clams are open (approximately 9 minutes). Sprinkle with reserved garlic and a squeeze of fresh lemon.

CELEBRATE SPRING WITH A SPANISH ROSÉ!

2009 Espelt Corali Rosado, Emporda ($10.99) We weren’t able to get any of this fantastic rosé last year. The new vintage just arrived last week and the distributor is already sold out! The 2009 Espelt Corali is light salmon colored with fresh aromas of berries. Strawberry notes have a creamy texture with refreshing mineral snap and a long crisp finish. Absolutely delicious! We have two cases in stock.

2009 Cune Rosado, Rioja ($11.99) Made of 100% Tempranillo, Cune Rosado was macerated on the skins long enough to produce a beautiful light ruby color with vibrant fruitiness. This is a rich rosé with body, balanced by zesty acidity and a long clean finish. Highly recommended!

2009 Ameztoi Rubentis Rosado, Txakolina ($19.99) Rosé txakolis from the Basque country are rare and when this one came along, we happily scooped it up! With aromas of raspberry, Ameztoi Rubentis has delicate flavors of wild forest fruits mingled with ripe apple. Containing only 10.5% alcohol, it is light on the palate and easy to drink. And it has the cleansing effervescent of a white txakoli which makes it super with seafood or tapas.

Close out special! 2007 Artazuri Rosado, Navarra ($5.99) Artazuri is one of our favorite producers from the region of Navarra. This rosé is made from 100% garnacha in the saignée method, where some of the juice is bled off the skins after a short maceration period. Normally rosés are meant to be drunk young, but when the distributor dropped the price of this 2007 to an absurd level, we couldn’t resist. We paired Artazuri rosado with grilled scallops and its crisp strawberry fruit was vibrant and delicious. And at this price, it makes sense to pour it in large quantities on the Seattle’s Opening Day Boat Parade or at a Mother’s Day brunch!

RED WINE:

2006 Casa de Illana Tradición, Ribera del Jucar PRICE REDUCTION Was $13.99, now $9.99. Bright and clean, Tradición is a blend of 45% Bobal, 30% Tempranillo and 25% Syrah. Aged three months in barrels, it is loaded with blackberries, cherries, violets, licorice and nuances of earth. With sweet tannins, mineral notes and an excellent food pairing quality, it is delicious served with a tapas assortment. 89 points Wine Advocate

2009 Early Harvest Neus Extra Virgin Olive Oil Neus Especial is a delicious, early harvest olive oil made from the best hand-picked green arbequina olives from Priorat in Northern Spain. This year’s early harvest olive oil has a sweet and dry hay aroma, a buttery flavor and an explosive presence in the mouth. Absolutely wonderful in a salad dressing, drizzled on top of sautéed halibut or used to marinate olives. If you really want to spice things up, try tossing with some fresh popcorn, sea salt and a few shakes of sweet paprika!

Padron Plants are Here!

Our sunny winter weather has us thinking of gardening, and how great it was to fry up all of those Padron Peppers last summer! We’ve now got Padron plants for sale at Spanish Table for $4.99 each. Don’t plant them outside yet; keep them indoors in a sunny window and let them grow until it’s consistently above 45 degrees at night, (mid-May or early June).

SPANISH TABLE WINES

With St. Patrick’s Day over and the craving for green beer satisfied, we’re turning our attention back to wine. Here are some great finds, all for under $20.00!

2008 Los Bayos Joven, El Bierzo ($7.99) It’s rare to find a wine from the El Bierzo region for this price, especially one produced from 40 year old vines. Made of 100% Mencia, Los Bayos displays all of the minerality and black fruit flavors typical of this grape. With aromatics of earth, ripe berries and leather, the body is rich with concentrated notes of boysenberry liqueur and hints of chocolate. It’s got impressive length, and is an all around excellent wine for this price!

2008 Benaza Mencia, El Bierzo ($13.99) This Burgundian-style Mencia is loaded with black fruit, notes of earth and abundant minerality. “Bright ruby. Black raspberry and cherry on the nose, with notes of cracked pepper, licorice and violet adding complexity. Refreshingly bitter dark berry flavors are given spine by a tangy mineral quality and betray no rough edges. Finishes with mouthwatering acidity and a bitter cherry skin quality. This will be very flexible at the table.” Stephen Tanzer 2007

Emilio Moro Finca Resalso, Ribera del Duero ($13.99) “The 2007 Finca Resalso was sourced from younger vines and aged in French oak for four months. Dark ruby-colored, it emits an enticing perfume of mineral, violets, black cherry, and blackberry. On the palate it reveals an elegant personality, savory, spicy flavors, good depth, and a fruit-filled finish. Drink this tasty effort over the next four years. The Moro family has been making wine in Ribera del Duero for over 120 years.” 90 points Wine Advocate 2007

D’Este Vinos El Molinet, Valencia ($14.99) “80% tempranillo and 20% cabernet sauvignon. Deep, bright red. Fresh red berry and baking spice aromas are strikingly brisk and focused. Racy, light-bodied raspberry and cherry flavors are unencumbered by tannins but nicely framed by juicy acidity. Pinot-like in its vivacious, red-fruit expression and firm finishing cut. This is really delicious.” 90 points Stephen Tanzer 2007

Volver La Mancha ($15.99) “…(100% tempranillo). Bright purple. Sexy aromas of blackberry, incense and cocoa powder are complemented by a suave smoky quality. Plush, creamy dark berry flavors possess plenty of weight but are energized by racy minerality. Chewy tannins arrive with air, adding grip to the broad, sappy, persistent finish. Complex enough to enjoy now.” 90 points Stephen Tanzer

March is full of madness with springtime’s newness busting out all over. Here at The Spanish Table, we love the new — especially new products! Last Saturday we unloaded two pallets of Portuguese and Spanish specialties that we haven’t been able to stock for a long, long time. In addition, we brought in items that customers have been asking for, and some things that no one’s asked for, but are really delicious. Give them a try!

 SPANISH TABLE WINES

2008 Naia, Rueda ($14.99) Another stellar favorite returns! Just in time for white wine season, Naia has zesty notes of grapefruit and hints of pine, with creamy flavors of ripe apple and melon. Laced with minerals, it is vibrant, fresh and clean. Absolutely delicious!

2006 Venta Mazzaron Tempranillo, Zamora ($14.99) “The 2006 Venta Mazzaron is 100% Tempranillo aged in oak for nine months. Deep crimson-colored, it offers up a smoky perfume of mineral, licorice, espresso, and blackberry. This leads to a firm, structured wine with plenty of succulent fruit, spice notes, excellent balance, and a pure finish. Although it will improve in the bottle for 1-2 years, it can be enjoyed now.” 90 points Wine Advocate

Rioja in half bottles! We spotted these 375 ml bottles at Bodegas R. Lopez Heredia last summer and asked our distributor to bring them in. Absolutely perfect on those nights when you crave a really good glass of wine but not a whole bottle.

2000 Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja ($29.99) Aged six years in barrel, it has delicate red fruit flavors, notes of earth and coffee with velvety tannins.

2004 Viña Cubillo Crianza Rioja ($19.99) Aged in oak for 3 years, it is fresh and silky smooth. With notes of licorice and cherry aromas, it has consistent texture and a persistent finish.

COLLECTOR’S CORNER

2007 Clos I Terrasses Clos Erasmus Priorat ($190.00) Two bottles available! The 2006 vintage received 97 points from Wine Advocate and 95 points from Stephen Tanzer. (Our two bottle allocation of the 2007 vintage has not yet been rated). Winemaker Daphne Glorian was one of the pioneers who revived D.O. Priorat in the 1980’s, and Clos Erasmus is one of benchmark wines from this region. A blend from four vineyards totalling 2 hectares, the annual production is less than 140 cases per year.

1976 Blandy’s Terrantez Madeira ($189.00) Wines made from the Terrantez grape are very rare. Low yielding, the total annual harvest does not even fill a 500 liter cask. Rich and medium sweet, it has outstanding roasted aromas and a little musk, then a touch of something wild and leathery, with a lot of dried fruits. On the palate it has a sweet nuttiness, powerful acidity, a layer of bitter walnut, lots of caramel, raisins, molasses, and a persistent finish. Try this stellar Madeira while you can!

 Our friends on Madeira were hit by a massive storm on February 21, the worst in 100 years. Thankfully, everyone at Blandy’s and Madeira Wine Company are safe, although at least 40 other people lost their lives. To see a video of the storm, click Madeira.

PARIS GROCERY WINES

2008 André Neveu Sancerre “Le Grand Fricambault” ($24.99) André Neveu’s vineyards are located in Chavignol, on the silex soil of Sancerre’s hillsides. Highly aromatic, his exquisite Sauvignon Blanc reflects this flinty terrain. Bone-dry and chalky, it exudes aromas of citrus, grapefruit, and limestone. Tart, concentrated, and marvelous with Crottin de Chavignol, the local goat’s milk cheese. It drinks like a Grand Cru Sancerre!

2008 Terres Dorées Beaujolais “L’Ancien” ($16.99) Traditional Beaujolais wines have amazing fruit and depth, and this wine really overdelivered at a recent tasting. Winemaker Jean-Paul Brun is a relentless advocate for winemaking à l’ancienne and seeks to make old-style Gamay wines. He does not add sugars to his wine and uses only indigenous yeasts for his fermentation, instead of the lab-developed strain popular in the region for its banana and candy aromas. This Beaujolais is 100% old-vine Gamay, delicate and pure, showing excellent balance, freshness and acidity. Mineral-driven, with bright cherry, cranberry and sweet spices melding into a lengthy finesse. A remarkable value! 90 points Wine Advocate

PARIS GROCERY FOODS

We happily sneeze our way through this early touch of spring, as long as we have some yummy new items to snack on and cook with. Here are some of our much-anticipated new and returning items:

 French lavender and tarragon. Packed out here at Paris Grocery into 8 ounce containers. Tarragon plays a starring role in a classic Béarnaise sauce. Try the lavender on a leg of roasted spring lamb, or sprinkled on a log of fresh chèvre.

Pamplie Salted Butter.From Poitou-Charentes, a region famous for its dairy products. Pamplie is preferred by chefs for its firm consistency, pale color, and rich flavor with hints of hazelnuts. Made with fleur de sel from Île de Ré, this butter just gets better.

 Tome d’Acquitaine is back! This is one of our absolute favorite cheeses. The beautiful snow-white interior of this washed-rind goat’s milk cheese will catch your eye. Washed in Sauternes by the respected affineur Jean d’Alos, it displays delicately balanced fruit and floral notes.

Abbaye de Tamié cheese makes a stunning debut. We asked Olivier to bring us a fantastic example of a monastery cheese, and he did not disappoint. The monks of Tamié have been producing this cow’s milk cheese since the year 1135. We think they are getting the hang of it- this cheese is marvelously creamy, almost spreadable, with a pungent fruitiness and undertones of sweet hay and fresh cream.
